Minister for Environment announces the appointment of John McCarthy to the post of Secretary General.

The Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, T.D. has announced that at its meeting today the Government approved the appointment of Mr. John McCarthy to the post of Secretary General of the Department of Environment, Community & Local Government with effect from 21 March, 2014.

Mr. McCarthy is currently the Assistant Secretary responsible for the Local Government Division in the Department, where he has led the ongoing major programme of local government reform.

He has served as an Assistant Secretary in the Department for 6 years, during which time he has also led the Department’s Environment and Housing Divisions. Overall, he has worked in a range of capacities across the Department over a period of 20 years, and has also worked in a number of other Departments, including the Department of Social Protection and the Department of Finance.

A native of Macroom, Co. Cork, he was educated at De La Salle College Macroom, University College Dublin and the Open University.
