€425k running track at regional sports centre Waterford opens

Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring TD has this afternoon officially opened a new €425,000 running track at the regional sports centre in Waterford.

The MONDO athletics track is part of a new development which includes a multi-sports area for other sports including cricket and archery. The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport allocated €425,000 for the new track and sports area under a 2012 Special Tracks Initiative.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to attend the opening of this magnificent new facility. It’s an impressive set-up and a good example of how funding under my Department’s Sports Capital Programme has improved sporting facilities across the country,” Minister Ring said.
This new track will allow Waterford to meet the growing demand for athletic facilities in the south east, and would also be ideal for national and international race meetings. A MONDO track is a solid rubber track which is ideal for wet climates, and matches the standard used in the London Olympics 2012.
“This athletics track will encourage more people to get involved in sport in the future and it should also improve performance levels among existing athletes. It’s a great investment and I’m delighted to open it” Minister Ring said.
